How to MIX Your Own Watercolor Skin Tones From Scratch LIKE A PRO with Lucy Brydon!

29/9/2023

Hey Mixed Media Society member!! If you've never "met" my Scottish bestie, Lucy Brydon - today, you're in for a HUGE treat!!
Picture
Lucy is a stunning artist in my favorite place in the world. She loves painting watercolor portraits, gorgeous gouache animals on wood slices and leather-bound journals, and painting ginormous sculptures around Scotland whenever she has time.
Picture
Aren't these phenomenal?!

Lucy also teaches online art classes (For her own art club called Lucy's Art Lab; and the one we co-host together at Awesome Art School called the Celtic Collective).  We also co-host an art retreat in Scotland every year at a castle!! In a few short weeks, we'll be Lickleyhead bound (the pretty pink castle behind us below).
Picture
If you've never had the privilege of watching one of Lucy's videos - you're going to fall in love with her accent, her artistry, and mad teaching skills!

via GIPHY

Today, I'm thrilled to have Lucy teaching something I don't often have the patience for - mixing watercolors from scratch (instead of using them straight outta the pan like I do!), to create beautiful skin tones for watercolor portraits like this...
Picture
Am I the only one dying because not only are we painting with Lucy this week, we're painting a redhead with FRECKLES?!!

I digress... YOU are gonna love how Lucy not only included her lesson videos and reference photo, but she added a 9-page PDF detailing each step of today's lesson with work-in-progress shots - starting with a DRAWING lesson. It's like 2 lessons in 1!!
Picture
As always, use whatever YOU have and love, here's what Lucy used:

I can barely believe it, but this gorgeous lesson with all these fantabulous colors is also LESS than 1 hour long.

Enjoy!!

Missed the Last New Lesson?

No problem! Please remember, there is NO race to get through all the beautiful lessons in the Mixed Media Society. Tons of students love to skip around and only "art" once in a while, while others prefer to do new lessons as soon as they come out. YOU do whatever feels best for you and your lifestyle :) There's no wrong way to do it!

No matter what camp you fall into, if you didn't do this lesson yet...
Picture

I think you'll enjoy it! She may look difficult, but I of course break the project down step-by-step to help you along. Beginners are TOTALLY welcome to give this lesson a shot.  Just look at what some of your fellow club members are sharing in the Facebook Group!!
Picture
Aren't they beautiful?! I love how everyone puts their own unique spin on lessons :)

This project is kind of the opposite of Lucy's because it teaches MY favorite way of doing watercolor skin tones (straight outta the palette!). I'm using the Complexions Set by Prima.  If you don't have this- use whatever you have that looks similar. If you're in the mood to add this to your art supply stash - it runs ~$25 or less on Amazon (U.S.).

Or, paint along to Lucy's lesson above, to learn how to mix your own skin tone watercolors from scratch!!

Two totally different approaches with gorgeous results!

In the Mood for Something Else?

I hear ya!! Click over to the Visual Index for the Mixed Media Society to choose something else that inspires you.

?If you're a FALL person, you might love playing around with fall projects like these...
Picture
The first 4 projects above can be found in the "Hot Dog System" Classroom (b/c they use 4 supplies or fewer!). The fall fox in the second row above, can be found in the "Hamburger System" Classroom.
?Ready to get your Halloween on?! You KNOW I've got you! There is an ENTIRE CLASSROOM dedicated to the holidays, which is especially filled with Halloween stuff, because, well, I'm ME, and Halloween is probably my fave!!

If you're hanging onto every last ounce of sunshine in summer, you might want to jump to the Fun Fab Florals classroom! All of these are excellent if you're looking for a simpler watercolor project for beginners as well.

What Else is Comin' Up?

We'll be moving into MEDIUM skin tones starting on the 15th.

You'll get a lesson from me using the Complexions Set by Prima again, and a medium skin tones lesson from Lucy teaching you how to mix your own skin tones.

Here's a sneak peek at what's comin' YOUR way!!

This one's from me (Karen)...

And from Lucy, below...

So beautiful!!

These are two amazing lessons you won't wanna miss!!

There's no Happy Hour LIVE this month because I'm literally not even in the office for SOOOO many days due to my upcoming art retreat in Scotland with Lucy and some family visiting from out of town.

I promise it will be back on the calendar next month!

And... Lucy and I have a special LIVE planned for you on Halloween!!
Can't wait for that:)

How to Create GORGEOUS Light Skin Tones Use the Complexions Watercolor Set by Prima

6/9/2023

Hi Mixed Media Society Club Member!!

I hope you're having a Fab weekend! Ready to leave the world of painting with Tombows behind to move into watercolors? I ALWAYS love a good excuse to get my watercolors out and am super excited!!

Here is the beauty we'll be creating today...
Picture
*All product links are affiliate and for U.S. residents only.*
I LOVE how she turned out, and hope you do too!
If you've been following me for a while, you likely already know that I kinda hate mixing my own skin tones in watercolor. And ever since I reviewed the Prima Complexions watercolor palette back in 2019 on YouTube - I've been using this set almost exclusively whenever I'm in the mood to create watercolor portraits.

Some people love mixing their own skin tones, but I feel like it takes too long and there's too much guesswork involved. I'd much rather dip my brush into a color that already exists, and know with confidence what's going to appear on my paper EVERY TIME.  Hence, why I fell in love with the Complexions Watercolor Palette by Prima.
Picture
Over the next few weeks, in the Skin Tones classroom, I'll show ya step-by-step how to use this palette to achieve beautiful skin tones in light, medium and dark just by using these 12 colors!

If you're someone who LOVES mixing her own skin tones - hang tight, because I've got a plan FOR YOU! My Scottish bestie, Lucy Brydon, is a fantastic watercolorist. And she love, love, LOVES mixing her own skin tones! Over the next few weeks, she will be joining me as a guest teacher in the Mixed Media Society to teach you her best tips and tricks for creating skin tones from scratch!

By having lessons from both of us on this topic, you'll get to explore what YOU like best from these two, totally different perspectives!

As I always, say, please don't feel pressured to go out and buy the supplies I'm using. Use whatever you have on hand. If you can swing ~$25 for the Complexions set, you might want to, especially if you feel like you're in the camp of preferring convenient skin tones right outta the pan :)

Just remember Prima watercolors (any of their sets) are NOT lightfast or a fine-art supply. But for something that's "less" than a fine-art supply, the quality and price point can't be beat, in my opinion.

Haven't Had Time to Art Lately?

The summer has been crazy for me too!! I get it!! There are TONS of beautiful projects in the Skin Tones Classroom just waiting for you!

We started off the summer by exploring how to create skin tones using acrylic paints and a wet-on-dry technique with these projects....
Picture
Then we learned about watercolor markers (specifically, Tombows), and how these can create beautiful skin tones as well.
Picture
So many awesome choices, right?! I hope you have just as much fun with these as I did!!

In the Mood for Something Else?

Make sure you check out the Visual Index HERE.

Whether the leaves are starting to turn in your part of the world, or it's hot as crap like it is in North Carolina  -  you can IMAGINE welcoming the impending season of fall and WILL the weather to change creatively!! The first 4 projects below can be found in the "Hot Dog System" Classroom (b/c they use 4 supplies or fewer!).

Watercolor Markers That Create AMAZING Skin Tones BESIDES Tombows!

31/8/2023

Hi Mixed Media Society Club Member!!

I hope you're loving our LONG weekend (if ya live in the U.S.)!

Over the last few weeks we've done A LOT of work with our Tombows.

I don't know about you - but I've TOTALLY loved that!!

Today I thought I'd wrap up this little unit by showing you a few OTHER watercolor marker brands that I use and love when I'm NOT reaching for my Tombows - and what other products you might want to grab if you live in a part of the world where Tombows aren't readily available.
Picture
*All product links are affiliate and for U.S. residents only.*
Some of the products featured in today's 15-minute, mini-lesson are products I use and love, and some I've never even tested before until today.

👉Come check out these fun products with me!!
Picture

How is your Tombows "capstone" project going? I've seen quite a few of these floating around in the Facebook group and am loving it!!
Picture
This was NOT an easy project by any means!! I'm SO proud of your bravery for trying her, working through it and having the courage to share your work with the group. BRAVO!!

👉If you haven't had a chance to do this lesson yet, click the button below to get started.

Haven't Had Time for ANY Tombows Projects?

Don't give it another thought! There is a TON of fun waiting for you in the Tombows section of the Skin Tones classroom whenever you're ready!!

Mixed Media Society "Happy Hour"

I hope you were able to join the group for our monthly club "Happy Hour" (and NO - it's not about drinking- we just have a fun happy time art-ing or discussing artsy stuff for an hour)!

In case you missed it in August - we went over Permanent vs. Water-Soluble art supplies, and specifically, what happens to BOTH between layers 3 and 5 of the Hamburger System.

✨Catch the HAPPY HOUR Replay Here!

👉Mark your calender to join us for the next one on Friday, 9/22!

Wanna Know What Else is Coming Up?

We're changing mediums this month and moving into the wonderful world of watercolors! I can't wait!!! If you don't have the Prima Complexion set of watercolors - I suggest you think about grabbing that to prepare for next few lessons (starting on 9/10), because I will be using it exclusively for skin tones.

I LOVE this little palette because you can get SO many different skin tones right outta the pan! And they look beautiful!! No mixing needed :) The lazy girl in me LOVES that!! Over the next few weeks, I'll be teaching my lessons using this palette, while guest teacher Lucy Brydon will be teaching you how to mix your own skin tones from scratch! So cool :)

What Else is Happening in August?

Not much! This week's capstone project will most likely drag into next week so I don't want to overwhelm you with any new lessons on the 27th. Plus - if you're a "Wonder Bundler," you've got a new figure drawing lesson coming out next Sunday!

But after that ... I hope you're ready, because it's time to close the chapter on our Tombows for a bit, so we can start working with a NEW art supply to make beautiful skin tones - watercolors!

Picture
*All Product Links Are Affiliate & for U.S. Residents Only.
This summer we've been hanging out in the Skin Tones classroom.

My goal here is to help you feel comfortable creating GORGEOUS skin tones using a wide variety of mixed-media art supplies.

We started out in acrylics!
You'll find 3 projects in this classroom teaching you how to create
light, medium, and dark skin tones
in just a little over an hour per lesson.
Picture
Then we put together EVERYTHING we've learned
or one GRAND FINALE project!

Check this out...
Picture
This lesson is a little on the long side (~2.5 hours) compared to what I usually do - but I think it was SO worth it, don't you??!!

What I've really been loving about these projects is seeing how many members are sharing their work in the Facebook group.

The growth in this group has been astounding!!
Just look at Robin's version of this lesson!!

She's killing it, and YOU can too!!
Picture
If you're not in the mood to mess with your acrylics today,
and want to explore how to create beautiful skin tones using your Tombow dual brush pens, I've got SO much fun in store for you!!

First, I teach you about the properties in these markers,
and how you can use them in 5 different ways.
Picture
Next, I show you exactly how to "paint" the girlie below using a variety of oranges in case you don't have the portrait skin tones set above!
Picture
Next, there are two more Tombow painting projects
we can work on together in this classroom...
Picture
✨Last week I did a PRIVATE DEMO, just for you, about how to eliminate streaking in Tombows and showed ya which other mixed media art supplies play nicely with them.
Picture
If you've been following along with all
the new lessons this summer in the Mixed Media Society,

you may have fallen in love with your Tombows as much as I have!!

In case that's you...

✨THIS WEEK, I've added FOUR more oldies-but-goodies
Tombow projects to the classroom!

There are two grayscale projects...
Picture
And two Tombow projects in color!

Hey Mixed Media Society member!! I'm SO excited you're here!!

❤️️Watch this week's Newsletter Hello Video from ME!!

If you've been following along with new lessons lately, you know we've been playing around A LOT with Tombow Dual Brush Pens in the Skin Tones Classroom! I don't know about you, but I've totally been loving more time with my Tombows!
Picture
👉Last week I released the 1-Hour lesson above and hope you enjoyed her! If you haven't had a chance to do this one yet, don't worry about it!! You are NOT behind. She will be right here waiting for you whenever you get around to it :) And... just so you know you get to use pretty much all the Tombows in the pack with this project!! Love it when that happens :)

👉This week, instead of doing a demo on YouTube with tips about how to eliminate streaking in Tombows, and which mixed media art supplies play nicely with them, I'm doing a PRIVATE video and only sharing this info with YOU!!  Enjoy!!

First Club Happy Hour!

👉
If you didn't join me this past Friday for our first Happy Hour (reformatted Office Hours),  I'm hoping you can join us for the next one!!

Catch the replay here.
We went over Permanent vs. Water-Soluble art supplies, and specifically what happens to BOTH between layers 3 and 5.

We also discussed different ways to PREVENT smearing. I also did a live demo to test how Pan Pastels, Gelatos and Pentel Pocket brush pen reacted in the Hamburger system.

So fun!!!

23/7/2023

Hey!! I'm SO excited to bring you your VERY FIRST Mixed Media Society members-only blog article!

My goal with the members-only blog is to help you stay up to date on what's happening inside your mixed media art club membership so you can make the most of it and have THE BEST TIME!

Because let's be honest, that's WHY we're here, right?! To have FUN with our art?!
Picture
All links are affiliate and are for U.S. residents - always use what you have on hand!
If you've been following along weekly in the club, we are currently working in the Skin Tones Classroom and learning about how to use Tombows to create gorgeous skin tones in our mixed media portraits.

Last week I showed you how to create the girl above and how to add GESSO to your Tombows to aid with blending and eliminate streaking. Pretty cool trick, right?!

👉If you haven't had a chance to do this 1-Hour lesson yet, click here to get started.

👉If you don't already have a set of Tombows in your art supply stash, you can add a pretty cheap starter pack of 10 skin tones from Amazon for $17, or run over to your local art store.
Picture
One of the MAIN reasons artists (even FINE ARTISTS!) reach for Tombows is because of their afforable price point and because they offer SOOOOOO many freaking colors!! They're really an artist's dream :)
Picture
👉If you have a little more to spend and haven't picked up a set for yourself yet, or have tried smaller sets and want to invest in a bigger rainbow, you can grab a giant pack of 96 on Amazon for $137.

This week, I'm releasing a *NEW LESSON* in this Skin Tones Classroom and can't wait to share her with you!!
Picture
👉Click here to enjoy the above 1-Hour lesson & get started!!

Think these lessons look cool, but you're not sure if this classroom is right for you? I hear ya! Check out this video to see if you'll feel comfortable here.

You are NOT gonna want to miss a moment of August!!

I've been fan-girling over Polina Bright FOR YEARS
and ONLY use her amazing watercolor brushes! (Enter code KARENCAMPBELL to save 10% on your order. Be patient with shipping- they come from Australia but are SOOO Worth it!)

What Fans Are Saying

Karen, you are absolutely fabulous! You make me feel like I can draw anything. I have recently retired and finally have the time to do some of the art that I have loved since I was in school. I am really at the beginning of my art journey and I hope to learn as much as I can. Thank you for all you do.

-Jill Y.

I ordered your Fun Fab Faces book and loved it! I was having a little trouble getting the noses I wanted and now it's easy! Also, I love how you stressed how important having the three tones in your drawing is. Thanks a bunch!

-Donna L.

Thank you Karen! I never though I could do faces. You broke it down so it was understandable! And I love your book! I got it yesterday! Can't wait to start practicing! It's so much fun!!!!!

-Debbie M.

Thank you for the encouragement to get back into my drawing and painting. After being away for 35 years.  THANK YOU.

- Teresa S.
