Hey Mixed Media Society member!!

We're SO excited you're here. Are you ready to get your art on?!

Today, we're adding to our stockpile of lessons on how to create gorgeous skin tones in various mediums.

Your new lesson is from the lovely and talented Lucy Brydon. She's the master at mixing her own skin tones and watercolor in general, so get ready!

I've gotta show you a little peek into last week's art retreat when Lucy was teaching our guests at Lickleyhead Castle how to achieve this shiney 1800s hairstyle....

Here is the castle portrait we were attempting to replicate for our watercolor  lesson.  So beautiful, isn't it?!

👉Today's NEW lesson for the Mixed Media Society is just as awesome, and I can't wait for you to dig in :)

You'll find a whopping 10-page PDF in the classroom for you with photos of Lucy's work-in-progress photos throughout her painting process. These can be SO helpful to break things down and understand step-by-step what to focus on when.

As always, use whatever art supplies you have on hand and love, here's what Lucy used...

Haven't Had Time to Art Lately?

It happens!! Remember, you DON'T have to spend forever on a lesson and do it all in one sitting, ok? Maybe you want to only do the drawing portion toinght, and don't have time to watercolor until sometime next week. So what?! That's FINE. Keep the process enjoyable and go at your own beautiful pace.

And in case you're new here... we've been organizing your lessons on the blog by LESSON LENGTH since July to help you find quick lessons that might fit better into your daily life here and there.

If you've only got 15 minutes or so to spare, grab a 15-minute lesson! If you have an hour or more, choose one of the longer lessons!
Picture
Just remember nothing has to be done in one sitting.

Want to try the skin tone watercolor lessons Lucy and I recently released? So far we've done light and medium skin tones...

Head over to the Latest Lessons Classroom to try any one of these!

Hey Mixed Media Society Member!

I hope you've been having a blast with Lucy's recent lesson on how to mix your own skin tones to create a stunning Scottish Lass, with freckles, no less!!

I'm LOVING seeing so many of these floating around in the Facebook group. They're just gorgeous!!
Picture
So tell me, what do YOU think about the whole process of mixing your own skin tones vs. using colors straight outta the palette?

Today, we're back to the Complexions set by Prima. I HOPE you love this set as much as me, and if you have something you like better- that's awesome, please use it!!

As I mentioned, we're back to the Prima Complexions watercolor set for this project, if you have it. And by all means, if you LOVED mixing your own skin tones with Lucy - PLEASE do that again in this lesson if you're feeling called to do so.

Haven't Had Time for Lessons Lately?

It's ok! Don't sweat it. Remember, your race, YOUR pace! You're doing this for fun and the joy of creating art and enjoying that whole process, right? The lessons are just sitting here ready and waiting for you whenever you have the time.

Here's a quick glimpse of the two latest projects that have been released in the skin tones classroom. The lesson on the left is from my Scottish bestie, Lucy Brydon (who co-hosts the Celtic Collective with me!), and the one on the right is from me.

While the lessons may look similar - light skinned watercolor portraits - they're very different. Not only are they presented by two totally different teachers, Lucy shares her "mix your own" approach to watercoloring skin tones, while I share my "straight outta the palette" approach!
Picture
Both are SUPER fun and so worth your time. Even if you're a baby beginner you can try my lesson (right). You can try Lucy's too, but it might feel easier for you to grab the Prima Complexions watercolor palette so we're using the same supplies and follow my lesson first before switching over to Lucy's. Just my advice :)

You can find BOTH lessons in the Latest Lessons Classroom.

In the Mood for Something Else?

I hear ya!! There is SO much to explore in the Mixed Media Society :)
Feel free to scroll through the Visual Index to see what looks most fun to you and click on that project to get started!
Picture
If you're a FALL person, you might love playing around the fall projects like these...
Picture
The first 4 projects above can be found in the "Hot Dog System" Classroom (b/c they use 4 supplies or fewer!). The fall fox in the second row above, can be found in the "Hamburger System" Classroom.

Ready to get your Halloween on?! You KNOW I've got you! There is an ENTIRE CLASSROOM dedicated to the holidays, which is especially filled with Halloween stuff, because, well, I'm ME, and Halloween is probably my fave!!

What Else is Comin' Up?

In 2 weeks we'll get another Lucy lesson on how to mix your own skin tones to create a Medium skin-toned watercolor portrait.
Picture
Then be sure to mark your calendar because on HALLOWEEN, Lucy and I will be doing a LIVE art along together!! Stay tuned for details :)

What Fans Are Saying

Karen, you are absolutely fabulous! You make me feel like I can draw anything. I have recently retired and finally have the time to do some of the art that I have loved since I was in school. I am really at the beginning of my art journey and I hope to learn as much as I can. Thank you for all you do.

-Jill Y.

I ordered your Fun Fab Faces book and loved it! I was having a little trouble getting the noses I wanted and now it's easy! Also, I love how you stressed how important having the three tones in your drawing is. Thanks a bunch!

-Donna L.

Thank you Karen! I never though I could do faces. You broke it down so it was understandable! And I love your book! I got it yesterday! Can't wait to start practicing! It's so much fun!!!!!

-Debbie M.

Thank you for the encouragement to get back into my drawing and painting. After being away for 35 years.  THANK YOU.

- Teresa S.
