How to Create a Mixed Media Scarecrow Painting on Sheet Music!

10/11/2023

Hey Mixed media Society Member!

I hope you’re having a fab week :) I can’t wait to share a NEW FALL mixed media art project with you! I decided it was time to put our skin tone paintings on hold for a bit, so we could truly embrace the season.
There’s something so fall about a scarecrow isn’t there?
I thought you'd just love creating this watercolor scarecrow painting with me!

Isn't he adorable?!

I painted him on top of sheet music to mix things up a little. I actually have a book of sheet music that I picked up at my local thrift shop specifically to art in. I’ve upcycled this into an altered book art journal. If you don’t have something like this - don’t worry about it. You can take a field trip yourself to grab your own used book of sheet music, or you can skip it entirely and just work on watercolor paper.
Because sheet music isn’t printed on watercolor paper, and we’ll be using watersoluble art supplies on top, we need to prep our paper with watercolor ground. If you’re not sure how to use watercolor ground - I go over this in-depth in our lesson.

I used my Winsor & Newton watercolor markers to create my scarecrow. You could also use Tombows, straight watercolor, or watercolor pencils. It’s totally up to you.

👉Stay Tuned for details on our Happy Hour LIVE next Friday, 11/17.
It’s gonna be SO much fun!! We’re going to create a canvas  you can hang up before Thanksgiving that says GATHER! I can’t wait!

You can use any canvas you’d like, but I thought a giant oval would be fun! Here’s what I’ll be using, in case you’d like to get it ordered ahead of time :)

What Fans Are Saying

Karen, you are absolutely fabulous! You make me feel like I can draw anything. I have recently retired and finally have the time to do some of the art that I have loved since I was in school. I am really at the beginning of my art journey and I hope to learn as much as I can. Thank you for all you do.

-Jill Y.

I ordered your Fun Fab Faces book and loved it! I was having a little trouble getting the noses I wanted and now it's easy! Also, I love how you stressed how important having the three tones in your drawing is. Thanks a bunch!

-Donna L.

Thank you Karen! I never though I could do faces. You broke it down so it was understandable! And I love your book! I got it yesterday! Can't wait to start practicing! It's so much fun!!!!!

-Debbie M.

Thank you for the encouragement to get back into my drawing and painting. After being away for 35 years.  THANK YOU.

- Teresa S.
