How to Shade a Fun Fab FIERCE Figure Drawing in Alcohol Markers

30/8/2023

Hey Fun Fab Drawing Club Member!!

❤️️Fancy meeting YOU here!❤️️

This week, I've released part two of the lesson we started last week, so we can color in our Fun Fab FIERCE Figure drawing. That's a mouthful!

LOL. I don't know about you, but I just LOVE coloring with alcohol markers. They pack SO much punch in such a short time.
It's like marker to paper, and BOOM! You're done!

Fineliner Tips

If you're ready to dive right into the coloring portion of this project,
grab your markers and let's get to it!

Before I did any shading, I outlined the entire figure in black fineliner (These are the Molotow Fineliners I love https://amzn.to/3Bp41GF. If these are out of your price range, I recently discovered a cheaper alternative that also works well: https://amzn.to/3DKH0i8).

Make sure you are using water-based or pigment-based fineliners so they don't smear if/when you start coloring with alcohol markers. This is SUPER important. If you use an alcohol-based marker like a fine liner sharpie - it will create issues because the alcohol fineliner lines will try to "blend" with the alcohol marker shading. Your outlines won't look crisp and awesome anymore, and if you're using any light colored alcohol markers, dragging these over your black alcohol marker outlines can wreck your lighter shade markers.

Trust me - I learned the hard way :)

Water or pigment-based fineliners are a MUST if you want to outline or add details in black. By the way, outlining can be done either before OR after you shade. I've done both. Today I just started with outlining.

Here's what else I used...

Supplies

Alcohol Markers in a variety of colors.

LEGIT....

Use what you've got here and don't go running off to buy Copics (unless you want to)! ArtBeek is my favorite alternative brand for the cheapest alcohol markers: https://amzn.to/3YgZws8

Ohuhu rocks for their Skin Tones! https://amzn.to/3XphRmx

Bristol (smooth) https://amzn.to/3fHvKL1 (I also love this Hammermill printer paper for alcohol markers - you can get a ton of it for $20 on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3OY4Dt5)

I also used Copics for color in all the basic primary and secondary colors (that's fancy speak for RAINBOW colors :) And some greys too.

Feeling confident and ready to dive into the angry figure lesson? Awesome! As always, used whatever you've got on hand, here's what I used:

SUPPLIES

Bristol https://amzn.to/3ebGY9u

Mechanical Pencil https://amzn.to/3ACYRpD

Ruler

Triangle https://amzn.to/3e4jgfw
In today's lesson, I've left quite a few additional resources to help you out including my Quadrant Method cheatsheet and a reference image for today's project.

You'll also find a 7-pg excerpt from my How to Draw Art Deco Style book that thoroughly explains how the quadrant method can help with figure drawing. Click the button below, and let's get started!
Picture
👉Haven't had a chance to do the angry face lesson yet, so not ready for the angry figure? I've got you! Head over to that lesson here.
Picture
👉Because I wasn't in love with my final drawing from the above lesson, I revisited it during our very FIRST Brain Stretches & Sketches to explore how we can make our "fierce" faces look even angrier! Make sure you check that episode out here. You'll also get TONS of tips on how to choose excellent face-drawing reference images!
👉In case you missed Brain Stretches & Sketches on Friday, I showed my new Lesson Tracker to help you keep track of where you're at in the clubs a bit easier. It's kinda like a journal too because there's space to track your mood before and after your art session, along with the time of day.
Picture
Over time - you might begin to notice patterns like the time of day you prefer to art, and how just sitting down to create can affect your mood. I hope you love it!!

During this session, we also reviewed profile face drawing guidelines, angles, and how to work expressions into them - which can make things feel extra tricky!!

Click the button below to join me for the replay!

👉Not in the mood for any of the above lessons today? No problem! Take a look at the Visual Index for some other project inspiration!

What's up Fun Fab Drawing Club member?!

I hope you're having a FAB weekend :)

❤️️Watch this week's Newsletter hello video from ME!❤️

If you've been following along with new lessons, we're still hangin' in the Expression Sketchin' Classroom. If you haven't had a chance to do any of these lessons, don't sweat it, but this is a GREAT place
for you to start playing around :)
Picture
So far, we've learned how to do 3 expressive faces, AND how to add a body to TWO of those faces using my simple dot method! If you've NEVER drawn a figure before - I hold your hand the ENTIRE WAY, share tons of tips to keep things EASY, so you can draw a figure SUCCESSFULLY!!
Picture
Last week I did my first 30-Minute Brain Stretches & Sketches with Karen. In case you missed it, this is the new format of our monthly meetings. We'll take a look at something we've drawn and try to make it better together.

Last week, we worked on how to make our angry faces even angrier!!

👉Watch the replay of last week's Brain Stretches & Sketches here.
Picture
This week, feel free to do whatever floats your boat! If you'd like some project suggestions related to what we've been doing,
I've got ya covered!!

👉Check out these TWO drawing projects in Alcohol Markers:

One lesson is a quick 8-Minute video, the other is only 15-minutes!

YOU CAN DO THIS!!
Picture
If you've been hanging with me for a while, you might recognize these two "bitch faces" (LOL!) from my #100FunFabFaces drawing challenge a couple of years ago. If you did them then, try them again using a different art supply to see how you've grown as an artist since then!!

👉If you still have those old drawings of these lessons, share your before & afters with us in the Facebook Group. Seeing artist growth is SO inspirational for new members (AND OURSELVES)!!

👉Not in the mood for expressions & figures today? Scroll through the Fun Fab Drawing Club Visual Index to decide what you'd love to draw next with me step-by-step, start to finish!!

What Fans Are Saying

Karen, you are absolutely fabulous! You make me feel like I can draw anything. I have recently retired and finally have the time to do some of the art that I have loved since I was in school. I am really at the beginning of my art journey and I hope to learn as much as I can. Thank you for all you do.

-Jill Y.

I ordered your Fun Fab Faces book and loved it! I was having a little trouble getting the noses I wanted and now it's easy! Also, I love how you stressed how important having the three tones in your drawing is. Thanks a bunch!

-Donna L.

Thank you Karen! I never though I could do faces. You broke it down so it was understandable! And I love your book! I got it yesterday! Can't wait to start practicing! It's so much fun!!!!!

-Debbie M.

Thank you for the encouragement to get back into my drawing and painting. After being away for 35 years.  THANK YOU.

- Teresa S.
